Place potatoes in a pot and cover with water. Cover pot and bring to a boil. Stir and leave cover halfway open. Cook until tender, 10-15 minutes. Stir halfway through cooking. Drain when tender.
To the same, now empty pot, add butter, thyme, salt and pepper. Add potatoes and mix well. Taste and adjust salt and pepper. Heat on low for a minute or two. Serve as is or smash potatoes into butter.
